The purpose and scope of this primary standard is to provide guidance on soil management to eliminate or minimise potential risks to the environment and human health associated with contaminated land, acid sulfate soils and acid sulfate rock. Contaminants such as hydrocarbons, asbestos, heavy metals, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), chlorinated solvents (and others) may be present in soil, groundwater and, if volatile, within soil pore spaces as vapour. Furthermore, acid sulfate materials can harm ecosystems, damage structures and permanent works, and change contaminant behavior within environmental settings.
